Journal, 2006:
Katcher, Brian S. Medline: A Guide to Effective Searching in
PubMed & Other Interfaces. 2d ed. Ashbury Pr. 2006. 148p.
index. ISBN 0.9673445-1-4. pap. $31.95.
For over 20 years, Katcher (San Francisco Dept. of Public Health;
Univ. of California--San Francisco) has been conducting his own
sophisticated searches in National Library of Medicine (NLM) databases
and has taken courses in how to search. He also authored the first
edition of this book (1999), which has now been expanded, rewritten
in many areas, and carefully brought as up-to-date as possible.
Katcher's agenda here is "the cultivation of an informed
and thoughtful approach to searching Medline," and his examples
pertain, for the most part, to NLM's PubMed database (pubmed.gov).
The search strategy used to retrieve journal articles is very
clear and well thought out, and chapter references highlight the
MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms describing each article
retrieved. It should be mentioned that current fact sheets and
tutorials, in print and on video, are freely accessible on the
PubMed site. Still, even the most seasoned searcher will find--or
be reminded of--useful information, such as the shortcut tip of
using a zip code as a synonym for an institution's name in PubMed's
author affiliation field. Katcher briefly mentions PubMed's historical
underpinnings, but chapter references will lead the interested
reader to more detailed information. The index is comprehensive,
and an appendix of web-based resources is also freely available
at the continually updated site, www.ashburypress.com/medline/resources.
Libraries owning the previous edition will want to purchase the
new one, and it is a must-have for all library school, medical,
hospital, academic, and large public libraries.--Martha E. Stone,
Massachusetts General Hosp. Lib., Boston
