About the author

Brian S. Katcher, Pharm.D., is the author of MEDLINE: a guide to effective searching in PubMed and other interfaces, now in its second edition. He was one of the founding editors of Applied Therapeutics: The Clinical Use of Drugs, a textbook used in training clinical pharmacists. He has also written for the American Journal of Public Health, other scholarly journals, and for the mass market consumer press.

Dr. Katcher is deputy director of the Community Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Branch of the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the University of California San Francisco.

His main work at the San Francisco Department of Public Health is promoting community-based, environmentally-focused primary prevention activities. He is interested in both the clinical use of drugs for common health problems and public health strategies to reduce the burden of these problems. His promotion of the most effective use of PubMed/MEDLINE supports a larger vision of evidence-based health policy and practice.
